Behind the Behavior: Understanding Mental Health in High-Conflict Legal Cases
Live-October 13th, 2025 9AM-10:15AM EST.
On Demand-October 14th, 2025-April 30th, 2027
Behind the Behavior offers attorneys a practical, trauma-informed lens to understand client behavior in high-conflict legal cases. Rather than dismissing emotional reactions as difficult or irrational, this course reframes them as potential trauma responses, equipping legal professionals to better interpret, manage, and communicate with emotionally dysregulated clients.
Participants will learn how common mental health conditions-like PTSD, anxiety, and personality disorders, manifest during legal proceedings and impact decision-making, conflict resolution, and attorney-client dynamics. The course also explores how to distinguish between strategic
manipulation and psychological overwhelm, with clear guidelines on when to refer clients for mental health support.
By addressing the emotional toll of high-conflict cases, attorneys will leave with tangible tools to maintain professional boundaries, reduce compassion fatigue, and practice more effectively within their scope.
CLE Credit Breakdown:
- 25 minutes General CLE (client behavior, legal strategy, and communication)
- 50 minutes Mental Health CLE (diagnoses, trauma-informed strategies, emotional regulation, and attorney wellbeing)
